Landmark R5000 Migration

Background

Eurotech had been providing on-site Geoscience support services for a UK based major oil company for a number of years. As part of this service and to supplement the customer’s resources we were asked to project manage the migration of their existing OpenWorks projects to Landmark’s latest R5000 platform.

The client used Landmark’s OpenWorks suite as its primary E&P software for seismic and well interpretation. As part of Landmark’s continual upgrade and improvement process it is necessary to follow their standard upgrade path to keep pace with changes in the software and enable users to work with the latest version of the OpenWorks / SeisWorks system.

Solution

Eurotech employed project planning to Prince2 standards. In this case, a 29 stage work programme designed with the stakeholders and migrated by asset group. The project was designed with clear aims and objectives, documented methodology, stakeholder analysis, work-packages, risk analysis and mitigation, plus a dissemination schedule.

The aims and objective of this project being:-

  • To provide users with current and up to date interpretation and reservoir modelling packages.
  • Upgrade all users to R5000 in a 3 month timeframe.
  • To provide data within a security framework that captures movement of datasets with correct permissions and avoids unnecessary duplication.
  • Upgrade of the Oracle databases holding the OpenWorks datasets.
  • Upgrade of associated SeisWorks data.
  • Controlling and locking projects where these are to be bi-located over two sites – avoiding data duplication and / or interpretation taking place simultaneously where this is unrecorded and not desirable.
  • Creation of interpretation projects with end users.
  • Training of end users at office locations where exposure to Landmark products has been minimal.
  • Export of seismic and / or interpretation data to vendor neutral formats where interim solutions are required to provide projects in formats compatible with existing software set-ups.

Outcome

The project was delivered on-time and to budget with users now reaping the benefits of the latest interpretation software helping to support the best decisions amongst Geology and Geophysics staff.
